Dangote Refinery to stop selling to marketers importing petroleum products – source

Lagos, Aug. 31, 2026, Dangote Refinery may stop selling its products to local marketers that continue to import products.

A reliable source said the company could take this action this week subject to further consultations.

Recall that last week, Dangote Refinery expressed its concerns over the rising importation of petrol into the country in spite of its ability to meet local demands.

The source said the refinery was being compelled to take this action immediately due to reports that some local marketers were blending imported products with Dangote products before distributing to consumers.

It said this practice could make it difficult for consumers to distinguish between imported products and products from Dangote Refinery.

He said this could eventually tell on the image of Dangote Refinery as blended products begin to manifest poor quality.

“It is difficult to understand why we would invest heavily in producing high-quality petroleum products for Nigerians, only for those products to be mixed with imported products of uncertain quality and the resulting product to be associated with the refinery,” he  said.

The source said Dangote Refinery has already established a good reputation due to the high quality of its refined petroleum products across the Nigerian markets and internationally.

“With a capacity of 700,000 barrels per day, Dangote Petroleum Refinery has emerged as a major supplier of refined petroleum products to both the Nigerian and international markets, supplying products that meet internationally recognised quality specifications,” it said.

The United States Energy Information Administration has already acknowledged Dangote Refinery as supplier of refined petroleum products that meet internationally quality specifications and also a major factor behind the increase in Nigeria’s seaborne petroleum product exports.

Nigeria’s seaborne petroleum product shipments averaged 561,000 barrels per day in the second quarter of 2026, compared with an annual average of 79,000 barrels per day in 2023.

Dangote Refinery’s jet fuel has also emerged as a preferred product in international markets, including the US and Europe.
