FG disburses N125bn in loans to 1.3m Nigerian students in tertiary institutions

New York, Sept. 25, 2026 – The federal government has disbursed N125 billion in loans to 1,290,000 Nigerian students in tertiary institutions under the Nigeria Education Loan Fund NELFund.

Vice President Shettima said this while speaking to some Nigerians in New York as part of his activities during his visit to the United States during his trip for the UNGA.

He described the NELFund programme is one of the initiatives of the current administration to reposition the economy, particularly the education sector.

The vice president said the government was doing its best in areas of education, health, science and technology, and agriculture and called on Nigerians in the diaspora to support the administration.

He said the government would leverage the intellect of the diaspora community to harness the nation’s potentials and take the country to greater heights.

Shettima said President Tinubu had been courageous since the onset of the administration and had taken bold decisions to reposition the economy.

He said the reforms undertaken by the administration had started yielding tangible results as evident in the increase in the country’s foreign reserves from 3.9 billion dollars to over 55 billion dollars.

Shettima also said the administration had recorded the improvements in the management of the foreign exchange market with the reforms already ensuring safety of diaspora remittances, stability of the exchange rate and investments made by Nigerians in the diaspora.

“When President Tinubu assumed office, he did not resort to trading blames and accusing his predecessor for the state of affairs of our nation. Rather, he took decisions that only a leader of courage and conviction would take.

“We are working day and night to reposition the Nigerian nation as investment confidence is returning to Nigeria, and the Dangote Refinery success story is a true manifestation in recent times.

“Be rest assured that beyond the negative stories that you hear and see in the social media, Nigeria is open for business. We have crossed the rubicon, and we are on the path of sustained growth,” he said.
